Made-to-Measure vs. Off-the-Rack: What the Difference Actually Feels Like

"Made-to-measure" gets used loosely enough in menswear that it's worth being precise about what actually changes when a suit is cut to your own measurements instead of pulled off a rack. Here's the difference in practice, not just in marketing copy.

Fit

An off-the-rack suit is graded across a size run — a 40R, for instance, is built to a standard chest, waist and sleeve ratio that fits an average body in that size bracket, then a tailor takes it in from there. A made-to-measure suit starts from your own chest, waist, hips, shoulder width, sleeve length, jacket length, trouser outseam, inseam and neck measurements, so the starting pattern is already built around your proportions rather than an average.

What you're actually paying for

Off-the-rack pricing reflects manufacturing at scale: the same pattern cut many times over. Made-to-measure pricing reflects a pattern cut once, for one person, then finished by hand — more labour and attention per garment, less economy of scale.

Timeline

Off-the-rack is immediate: you try it on, you buy it, you maybe get it altered. Made-to-measure isn't immediate — a Vane Kensington suit takes an estimated three to four weeks to produce once fitting begins, because nothing is cut until you've placed your order.

Returns

This is the practical trade-off worth knowing before you order: an off-the-rack suit in the wrong size can usually just be exchanged for another one from stock.
