Choosing The Right Tie

Choosing a tie is really choosing three things at once: fabric, pattern, and occasion. Get those right and the rest follows.

Fabric

Silk remains the standard for formal and business wear — it holds a knot well and catches light beautifully. Knitted silk and wool ties bring texture for smart-casual settings, while heavier wool or cashmere blends suit colder months.

Pattern

Solids and micro-textures (hopsack, twill) are the most versatile and safest for interviews or formal events. Stripes read as classic and slightly bolder. Paisley, florals, and jacquards add personality and work best when the rest of the outfit is kept simple.

Occasion

For business: solids, micro-patterns, or subtle stripes in navy, burgundy, or grey. For formal evening events: solid silk or satin in black, midnight blue, or deep jewel tones. For everyday smart-casual: knits, textured weaves, and more playful patterns.
